The town of Sallisaw in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma was the location of Blue Ribbon Downs racetrack which began in 1960 when Bill Hedge purchased 102 acres of land in the west of the town. The track offered Quarter Horse racing and became a popular venue for the American Quarter Horse Association which nominated it as one of their premier tracks in the state. Although Bill Hedge sold his interest in the track in 1973, by 1982, when the gambling laws in Oklahoma were relaxed, the track operated a pari-mutuel, launching it on 30th August 1984 boosted by a crowd in excess of 12,000. The tracks popularity decreased over time, its owners filing for bankruptcy in 1997, although the track did not close until 2010.
